Combustion Stability with Dual Ignition and Triple Spark

This study examines why ignition changes can make a modified BMW Airhead feel smoother without assuming a large increase in peak power. The organizing framework is cycle-to-cycle combustion stability: how consistently successive firing events develop pressure and torque under nominally similar operating conditions.
Two motorcycles provide contrasting field cases. The 1983 R80ST remains single-plug and uses Silent Hektik TripleSpark ignition. The 1993 R100R uses a Siebenrock 1070 cm³ big-bore kit with dual-plug cylinder heads and provides the dual-ignition case, including the transition to Silent Hektik TripleSpark architecture.
These are unusual configurations, particularly in the United States, but no uniqueness claim is made. The R80ST system was privately sourced in Germany after direct U.S. purchase was unavailable to the owner at the time; the 1070 dual-plug R100R represents a narrower configuration still when combined with TripleSpark.

The paper separates established combustion physics, manufacturer-documented architecture, engineering inference, and rider observation. It does not imply that dual plugging or TripleSpark is standard BMW Airhead equipment.
